Art project hopes to help boost businessesBy Joan CronknGateline.com

Jeni Woock thinks her idea may have sprung from a morning when she realized she had one too many cups of coffee.

Or maybe it was because she’s an accomplished glass artist and felt sympathy for a Gig Harbor businesses and its struggle to attract customers.

Whatever the reason, her inspiration was a good one.

Woock’s idea, which she has named the “Feel Good Free Art Project,” came from geocaching, which can be described as a high-tech treasure hunt played throughout the world when people use global-positioning devices to locate hidden containers. The game, which is said to promote a sense of community, can be played by people of any age.

Woock recognized an opportunity to help boost sales for local retail businesses, many of which are facing tough times.

“I just don’t want to see any more close their doors,” she said.

So Woock dug out some of her artwork, contacted local retailers and got to work by placing her art in local shops. After the art is positioned, Woock snaps a photo and places it on her blog, http://feelgoodfreeartproject.blogspot.com.

No sophisticated GPS systems are required to participate in the Feel Good Free Art Project, just a desire to shop and maybe walk away with a free gift.
