There’s a little piece of Denmark right in the heart of downtown Visalia.

Valhalla Restaurant has served breakfast and lunch, including a variety of wonderful homemade pies and ice cream, for nearly three decades.

“We have many customers who come nearly every day and many more who visit several times a week,” Kim Payne said, who owns the restaurant with her mother, Elsie Casida.

Payne and Casida opened the restaurant in September 1982, and today they are joined by Payne’s daughters, Rochelle Crisp, 26, and Melissa Payne, 22, making Valhalla a true family tradition.

About five years into the operation, a gift shop was added.

“It’s still mostly a restaurant,” Payne said, “a place where people can come in and eat and maybe pick up a gift, too.”
