Bird-themed items fill store shelvesBy Virginia RohanNorthJersey.com

New Jersey – As trends go, birds have never really been out.

But when it comes to home décor, our feathered friends are especially in right now.

Bluebirds on plates, songbirds on doormats, lovebirds on mirrors — you name it, somebody sells it.

“It seems that birds are highly marketable these days,” says Pete Dunne, chief communications officer for the New Jersey Audubon Society, who believes that the trend reflects people’s fondness for real birds. “If you want to take a barometer of popularity, take a look at marketing America.”

Americans have been feathering their nests with items sold by local shops as well as national chains and mail-order companies. Pottery Barn, for example, has a number of bird-themed items for sale this spring, and even featured a bird pillow on a recent catalog cover, along with the words “Nest … at home.”

Victorian Trading Co. has many bird-related items, including a birdseed pail and scoop ($59.95), a nest-egg salt-and-pepper set ($19.95), a pin cushion ($29.95), wind chimes ($49.95), outdoor “thicket arch” ($499.95), bluebird pillowcases ($39.95 a pair), a bird brooch ($16.99) and tea-for-one set ($19.95).
