Chocolate comeback: Kilwin’s reopens shop in downtown BirminghamBy TheOaklandPress.com

Kilwin’s Chocolates and Ice Cream, at 162 N. Old Woodward Ave. in downtown Birmingham, re-opened Feb. 6 under new ownership and management.

Linda Luhtanen, who also owns and operates the Kilwin’s store in downtown Plymouth, purchased the Birmingham location at the end of January from Candi and Bob Wanicke, who had previously operated it.

Luhtanen closed it down and made renovations quickly in order to be open in time for Valentine’s Day. Luhtanen, along with her son, Todd, said they want to open additional stores in Rochester and possibly Royal Oak.

Customers will find long glass cases full of Kilwin’s famous handmade chocolates and marble tables where fudge, peanut brittle, caramel corn, caramel apples and many other confections are created daily. Kilwin’s also has original recipe ice cream that is served in cake, sugar or handmade waffle cone.

The store will also feature gift baskets, boxed chocolates, trays and special occasion treats, along with beverages, including Kilwin’s hot chocolate, coffee, espresso, or cappuccino.

Passers-by can watch the chocolates being made through the large windows in the front of the store.
