Black Friday — the day after Thanksgiving — is the traditional start of the holiday selling season, but it seems many shoppers aren’t waiting.

In fact, a survey from the National Retail Federation found about 40 percent of consumers planned to make holiday gift or seasonal purchases before Halloween.

“I rang up a woman last week and she said, ‘Well, I’m done,’?” said LeAnn Sines, manager of Brown Wrappings, a home and gift store in Oak Park Mall. “I couldn’t believe it. She was done with all her Christmas shopping.”

Retailers don’t want to miss out on these shoppers and also want to entice those who don’t yet have Christmas on their minds. So they are scrambling to set up Santas and wreaths while black cats and ghosts are still on the shelves.

Seasons opened a temporary store Saturday in Oak Park Mall. The early opening also will be in time for hundreds of children going to the mall to trick or treat.
