Harvard Square’s Cardullo’s celebrates 60 yearsBy Gillian RichWickedLocal.com

Cambridge — Pasta from Italy, wine from France, chocolate from Germany and maple syrup from Vermont pack the shelves on Cardullo’s on Brattle Street. Sixty years after the opening of the store in 1950, the third generation of Cardullos is keeping traditions alive in the gourmet shop while looking to the future.

Over the next several weeks the Harvard Square institution will launch a revamped Web site to expand its online offerings; redo its logo for a line of private label products; and sell ready-made gourmet meals.

Cardullo’s opened in 1950 as a deli by Frank Cardullo. As he traveled Europe with his wife, Mary, he brought back condiments to complement the deli’s cold cuts and cheeses. Gradually Cardullo’s offered more than exotic mustards, adding wine, beer and jams over the years, and growing the gourmet food store it is today.

Cardullo’s revamped Web site to be launched in April will include 250 of their 3,000 products to be sold online. Currently the Web site only sells Cardullo’s traditional gift baskets to online customers.

“We are going to offer our best sellers as well as hard to get products, things that you wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere on the internet,” said Donez Cardullo-Tavilla, 43, the CEO of Cardullo’s and granddaughter of the founder.

Cardullo’s has a new logo, replacing an old fashioned style crown with a scripted letter C. With the new logo Cardullo’s offers private label products such as water bottles.
