Highland Park — In an effort to encourage people to shop locally and visit “green” or environmentally-conscious stores this holiday season, several borough businesses are launching a “Green Wednesday” marketing initiative.

“Green Wednesday” alludes to “Black Friday” — the official start of the holiday shopping season the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Marlon Pando, owner of White Lotus Home, started the promotion last year to try to get a two-day jump on “Black Friday.”

Along with White Lotus Home, two restaurants (Zeina and Tete’s), two shops (Over The Moon Toys and Through The Moon Gate), the fitness company Inspire Me Fit and others will offer promotions during this year’s official “Green Wednesday” on Nov. 24.

Pando said his store will offer 25 percent off of entire purchases on Green Wednesdays which he hopes will be held every week in November and possibly throughout December.
