Homer residents chocolate shop rolls out Valentine’s Day specialsBy Michael GilbertHomerHorizon.com

According to Margaret Carlson, owner of Hollingsworth Candies in Lockport, chocolate candies are the right route to your loved one’s heart this Valentine’s Day.

“People love the smell of candy. When they walk in and smell that chocolate it just puts a smile on their face,” the Homer Glen resident said. “Who wouldn’t be happy buying chocolate?”

Carlson co-owns Hollingworth Candies with her mother, Margaret Carlson, The business has been selling its milk chocolate toffee covered in fresh pecans for nearly 30 years. The candy store sells around 1,000 pounds of its toffee each week, Carver said.

“It’s our signature candy and most popular item,” she said. “The toffee doesn’t contain preservatives and it’s sold fresh so it just melts right in your mouth.”

After a hectic holiday season in which Carver shipped candies all over the Midwest and even Singapore, Chili and Costa Rica, the candy shop is gearing up for the steady stream of customers expected to be purchasing Valentine’s Day gifts this week.

“Every girl and guy deserves chocolate on Valentine’s Day,” Carver said. “We’ll have plenty of toffee and chocolate hearts available in Valentine’s Day packaging.”

The store has extended its hours to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, to accommodate additional Valentine’s Day shoppers. Customers can find a coupon on page A5 of this week’s Homer Horizon to receive $1.50 off a one-pound box of toffee.

Hollingworth Candies has several other treats for one’s sweetheart including chocolate-covered Oreos, graham crackers and pretzels. Crunchy cashew brittle and gourmet fresh caramel apples are also available, Carver said. All candies can be made with dark chocolate.
