It’s in the cards
Evolving from the old paper gift certificate, the gift card has grown to be one of the most popular items for men and women.
During the 2009 holiday season, some $87 billion was expected to be spent on gift cards, according to TowerGroup, a financial services research consulting firm.
Early on, if consumers wanted to give a friend or loved one a gift card, they went to the store and purchased a card in the denomination of their choice.
Today, you can do all your gift card shopping at one location, be it online or at a local retail store such as Kmart, Target or Best Buy.
Brenda Bryant, manager of the Kmart store in Muscle Shoals, said the store stocks a variety of gift cards, not only for Kmart, but for other businesses too.
“They sell very well,” Bryant said.
Kmart, which also owns Sears stores, carries “third-party gift cards” for restaurants including Outback Steakhouse, Chili’s, Subway, Applebee’s, Ruby Tuesday, TGI Friday’s and Cracker Barrel.
