Downtown chocolatier breaks mouldBy Gina TeelCalgaryHerald.com

Mention the word chocolate in Calgary and chances are images of delectable orbs fashioned from world-famous Belgian chocolate leap to mind.

But who knew that same level of chocolatey goodness could also be savoured in unusual forms, such as a beer bottle, a lady bug, curling rocks, a ballerina, a casino set, or even a beauty kit–all neat ways to personalize a gift of chocolate.

“We just sell so many of these things that we have to keep them in store year round,” Brady Lewis, owner of Lewis Chocolates & Candies, said of the vast selection of moulded items offered in his shop.

Lewis Chocolates is known for its themed moulded chocolate items– which number 1,400 types on its website — in addition to its boxed chocolates, all crafted from fine Belgian chocolate.

The retail store, located in Bankers Hall, features a selection of the moulded chocolate items, which on this particular day included numerous bunnies for Easter.

There are standby’s like chocolate coins, motorcycles, cowboy hats, cell-phones, and cigars, as well as popular gag gifts like handcuffs, or the His and Hers set comprised of a giant aspirin and an oversized Viagra pill fashioned from chocolate.

“All the moulded stuff is probably what sets us apart from every other chocolate company,” Lewis said.

The store is also known for its sugar-free chocolate. Sweetened with maltitol, this selection initially started with a lone solid bar available in milk, white and dark.
