The Hinesville Downtown Development Authority and Liberty County Chamber of Commerce continue to revitalize the Hinesville’s downtown shopping district through the Shop Local Initiative, and the effort is paying off.

The initiative, which is still in its early stages, encourages consumers to funnel money back into locally owned businesses and help independent retailers compete more effectively. HDDA Director Vicki Davis said area residents can shop for everything from produce to clothing.

The newly opened farmers market, which is set up every Thursday in the Commerce Street area, is a big part of the Shop Local Initiative. It offers fresh produce, art, crafts, military-themed products bearing designs specific to local units and other goods. The market gives regional vendors a chance to showcase and develop their products and the community support is evident, according to Davis

“It’s starting to make a difference,” she said. “We’ve seen many returning customers who are happy to have the freshest produce and help support local business.”

Farmers market vendors aren’t the only ones reaping rewards thanks to the amped-up initiative.
