Modern Day Masala Indian Spices Celebrates Fourth Anniversary by Going Salt-Free
Atlanta, GA – Modern Day Masala, a Georgia based line of Authentic Indian spices, increased sales by 85% over the past year. New packaging, an expanded production facility, and removing salt from its product line are credited with the growth. In addition to eliminating salt, benefits to consumers include standardization of serving size to the industry norm of 4 – 6 servings per package and new shelf prices.
“Moving to a larger space has resulted in a 30% increase in efficiency and production,” says President & Founder Kristin Sharma. Indian cuisine is on the rise as restaurants, shops, and expanded sections in supermarkets offer more than Americanized Indian cuisine moving to authentic products.
Modern Day Masala recently joined a nationwide public-private partnership, The National Salt Reduction Initiative*. The NSRI targets 62 categories of packaged food and 25 categories of restaurant food. “Our commitment to the terms of NSRI meet the target for salt content in the relevant categories,” says Sharma.
In 2007 Sharma conceived Modern Day Masala authentic spice blends as 100% organic. By widening the company’s commitment to health, salt-free spices are the natural progression. Consumers cutting back on salt intake should examine the various ways salt makes it into food. Household staples containing salt include mayonnaise, cottage cheese, yogurt, ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, pasta sauce, cream cheese, BBQ sauce, salad dressings, and many spice blends.
“We conducted consumer and vendor focus groups, and learned that home cooks want to be liberated from salt embedded in food by manufacturers allowing consumers to take control of their salt intake,” says Sharma. “Going salt-free does not mean that taste is sacrificed,” continues Sharma. “The rapid turn over assures freshness as spices are not ground until they are ready for packaging and shipping.”
Modern Day Masala marries the rich flavors of traditional Indian cuisine with the fast pace of American life and helps to make dinner a cultural experience. Founded upon the philosophy that food prepared with love and shared with family and friends tastes best, the Modern Day Masala blends and recipes help Americans prepare an authentic Indian meal from stove to table in less than 30 minutes.
