New card shop opens today in FultonBy Katherine CumminsFultonSun.com

Some of the shelves were empty, unpacked boxes were stacked next to the counter and there was a fine coating of sawdust on the floor and tables Tuesday afternoon, but manager and purchasing agent Carol David said The Gift Shop at Fulton Commons will be ready for business when it opens its doors at 9 this morning.

“We’re not fully stocked, but there’s no shortage of people who are ready to buy cards,” David said. “We’ve had probably twenty to thirty people knock on our door over the past two weeks, asking when we’re going to open.

“I’d prefer everything be perfect (before we open) but that’s not always how it works … and before long we’re going to be up and running.”

David, who managed the Westlake’s Hallmark store that closed in December 2008, said she is excited about welcoming familiar faces into the new store today.

“I’m looking forward to meeting the customers we’ve had in the past,” she said, noting some of the Hallmark employees will be returning to work for The Gift Shop as well. “Sarah will be coming back full-time, and a couple others who worked part-time will be coming back in the fall.”

It was feedback from loyal Fulton Westlake’s customers that David said led to the decision to open the new store.
