New gift store offers artwork made by Cardinal Cushing students
Hanover — A stroll through the Cushing Trader offers a treat for the eyes: Hand-painted furniture next to beaded jewelry, dry flower arrangements competing with framed artwork and stoneware pottery.
Even though the pieces at this trading post-style store – which opened Sept. 26 on the Cardinal Cushing School’s Hanover campus off Route 53 – are crafted by students, they have a gift store-like quality.
The school serves students ages 6 to 22 with a range of intellectual, behavioral, emotional and physical challenges.
Students also run the day-to-day operations at the store.
Cardinal Cushing teachers say the store has given their students an outlet for their creative energies. Art – and the selling of it – also serves them socially.
