Local stores catch the fever

A few local stores were taking the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president tomorrow as an excuse to create their own economic stimulus package.

Newbury Comics on Route 114 in Peabody is selling Obama T-shirts, magnets and life-sized cardboard cutouts, which sell for $32.99.

There are plaques, bumper stickers, inaugural edition trading cards and an Obama action figure that sells for $12.99. The box reads: “An action figure we can believe in.”

“This is the big seller,” said Justin Buzzell, a Newbury Comics manager, holding up a T-shirt drawn by comic book artist Alex Ross depicting Super Obama, which shows Obama as Superman, ripping open his suit to reveal a blue Superman suit with a giant red “O” on his chest.

The store also sold out quickly of the first printing of the inauguration day edition of “The Amazing Spiderman,” a Marvel comic book with a cover that shows Obama giving Spiderman a thumbs up. Obama is a fan of the web-slinging character.

Just down the road, iParty had its window decorated with cardboard portraits of Obama, a T-shirt that says: “Got Obama?,” pennants and banners that declare: “Yes We Can,” and a life-sized cutout of Obama wearing a knit hat with an inauguration seal on it. There’s also an Obama wall clock.

If you want to be Obama, you can do so by donning a rubber mask with his likeness, or pretend to be his Secretary of State designee, Hillary Clinton, with another one.
