Chester — When Stacy Padilla was four years old, she would sell pages from her coloring book to people walking past her house.
“Most kids sell lemonade; I sold pictures,” Padilla said. “My mother was always amazed that people bought my pictures. I know I wasn’t a child prodigy. I think they bought them because I was cute.”
Flash forward 30 years, and Padilla’s childhood pastime has grown up. At the end of the Heritage Trail in Chester, sandwiched between a barber shop and an ice cream parlor, is a store that houses not only one-of-a-kind gifts, but also holds a women’s dream. Padilla has wanted to own a gift shop like this her whole life.
The shop, named Pixie Dust, opened last November. Six months later, the store is thriving.
Talented local artisans create the gifts at Pixie Dust. Donna Buel of Highland Mills is one of the shop’s top artisans. She takes stock fantasy images and creates a collage much greater than the sum of its parts. Buel also creates dollhouses, fantasy-themed wall hangings, and what she describes as “cute whimsical signs.” When asked what is her best work, her response is “everything.”
