Longview, WA – The soft overcast light outside came to a stop at the front of the store, seemingly overwhelmed by the volume of jewelry, scarves, purses and other accessories lining the lit walls of the tall and narrow boutique Friday afternoon. Joan Bressler was explaining her new Longview business, Urban Chic’, as sterling silver and colors danced in light boxes and a deep display case.

“I hand pick everything, I don’t blindly order anything. I fly to shows. I go to Las Vegas and New York — those flew home with me,” she said, pointing to her display of stylish purses.

Open since February at 1336 Commerce Ave., Urban Chic’ is Bressler’s leftover ambition from the gym she owned from 2006 until last year, Lite Weights for Women, where she also had a small boutique, an interest of hers since she retired from the state Department of Natural Resources nine years ago.
