Todd Carr’s works to be featured at local shopBy Becky HathcockMcHerald.com

Todd Carr became interested in woodworking when he was a child.

His primary influences trace back to his grandfather, a contractor/woodworker, his own father who also worked with wood and a childhood trip to Biltmore, the Vanderbilt mansion located in Ashville, N.C., where the woodwork is particularly spectacular, he said.

“I’ve been making things out of wood ever since I can remember,” said the craftsman whose works will be featured next weekend during a showcase exhibit at Persnickety in Madison.

This will be the first exhibit for Carr whose talent has until recently been limited to making family and friends gifts.

“He is very gifted,” said his wife Susannah, who encouraged Carr to take a step of faith and share and sell his work with the public.

As fate would have it an injury that kept him from working in his career as a landscaper gave Carr more time to spend at home and hence more time working with wood.

During his hiatus, Carr decided to pursue woodworking as a profession, he said.

One of his first commercial ventures is marketing the artistic crosses and wooden bowls.

Having made crosses for his wife, an associate minister with the Methodist Church, Carr began making and selling altar crosses and prayer boxes at Cokesbury in Ridgeland.
