Shoppers making lists, checking twiceBy Leah SquareClarionLedger.com

Madison County shoppers are finalizing their gift lists, dusting off their shopping shoes and clearing out their trunks in anticipation of the day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday. It’s considered to be the official start of the holiday shopping season and undoubtedly the biggest shopping day of the year.

“My sister and I do it every year,” said Pam Carson of Madison. “I try to go and buy Christmas gifts, but sometimes I end up buying for myself.”

More than 140 million Americans will hit stores Thanksgiving weekend, according to the National Retail Federation, the world’s largest retail trade association. The average shopper will spend $360.15, the association predicts.

Many Madison County shoppers will begin camping outside Northpark Mall and local Wal-Marts in the wee hours of Friday morning.

When the clock strikes 5 a.m., get ready. Get set. Shop!

“Special discounts will be handed out at each entrance — 20 to 25 percent off,” said Audrie Thompson, general mall manager. “Naturally, our retailers are also going to offer special discounts that day.”
