Feminism pretty much skewered the knight in shining armor notion. Today, knights are for fairy tales.

As a result, more and more women are buying their own bling. But it isn’t just an I-don’t-need-a-man motivation. Women are buying jewelry for themselves for many reasons. And those reasons are as varied as the women themselves.

Leigh Graham, a married chartered accountant, attended a formal event in the fall and realized she was all dressed up, but lacked the finishing touch of good jewelry. “So I decided to purchase a Brazilian necklace with stones. I wore it New Year’s Eve to a dress-up jeans affair.

“It fits with everything, ” she said.

“Most ladies are working and they know what they need for their outfits,” said jeweller Bill Young, owner of Young & Co. “It’s hard to wait for a gift or an occasion to come along to get something to wear for work.”

Joel Simpson, co-owner of J.B. Simpson & Sons Jewellers Inc., said he’s seen a major increase in women buyers during the last couple of years.
