Operator sought for Muir Woods gift shop, restaurantBy Nancy Isles NationMarinIJ.com

Federal officials put the gift shop franchise at Muir Woods National Monument up for grabs this week, asking entrepreneurs who can provide a “model for sustainable operations” to compete for a 10-year concession contract.

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area seeks proposals to operate the gift store and 40-seat cafe, but added plans must feature local and organic food and beverages.

National Park Service officials also want the operation to reflect environmental values and a healthy diet devoid of chemical or biological additives.

In addition, the contractor must have verifiable waste reduction and recycling programs and offer environmentally-friendly products with packaging produced from recycled materials and biodegradable substances.

The contractor will be expected to conserve energy and water as well.

The current contractor, Aramark of Philadelphia, Pa., is designated as a Bay Area green business and uses mostly recyclable food containers. It offers a standard hot-dog-and-chili menu with the addition of organic soups, wraps and Starbucks coffee.
