Owner of Domus in Los Gatos lauded by chamber
Margaret Smith is a bona fide success. After all, she has the awards to prove it.Last April, the San Jose Business Journal named Smith the small businesswoman of the year at its Women of Distinction Awards dinner at the Fairmont Hotel.
Now the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce is getting into the act, naming Smith the Los Gatos businessperson of the year.
The Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce will honor Smith at a dinner at the Opera House at 5:30 p.m. on July 19.
Receiving awards for her success as a businesswoman and for her work promoting women in business is not something new for Smith. Back in 2000, Smith was elected to the Women’s Hall of Fame for her part in establishing a $1 billion loan fund with Wells Fargo Bank
Her community work and her work nationally to promote women in business go back over a decade.Smith knows about women in business from firsthand experience. She is the owner and CEO of Domus, a kitchen and home accessory store at 40 N. Santa Cruz Ave. She has run the downtown landmark since 1996.Domus, at 8,500 square feet, is jam packed with every sort of item for the home, from pots and pans to pink flamingoes. If you need to pick up a gift for just about any occasion, Domus is the place.
Dutch immigrants Paul and Geraldine Devos had run the store since 1974. When they decided to retire, Smith saw an opportunity. She bought Domus and has been running it ever since.
