Mother, daughter work together at their gift shopBy Sue Ellen RossPost-Trib.com

Gary – When Gwen Moore was 8 years old, her mother gave her a choice of activities to fill her leisure time. She had no idea that this choice would have a big impact on her adult life.

“It was either join the Girl Scouts or take ceramic classes,” said the Crown Point resident. “I tried the Brownie thing, but that just wasn’t me. So I chose ceramics.”

The hobby never left her, as she continued the craft throughout her adult life, even while raising four children.

Along with her daughter Lavita Burr, Moore owns and operates Gwen’s Expressions Gift Shop at 4444 Broadway. It opened four years ago.

Moore still makes ceramic pieces, using the creative skills she has developed throughout her life.

Tastefully decorated shelves and cabinets adorn the showroom, offering items with much diversity.

Colorful notepads and greeting cards grouped together in a wall display greet visitors as they enter the store. African art and many of Moore’s ceramic pieces can be found throughout. Other items, such as stained glass and china collectibles, add to the variety of items for sale.

Silk flower arrangements also are on tap at the business.

Although only Moore makes the ceramics, both mother and daughter design the silk flower arrangements.

Moore is a postal worker by day and works at the shop evenings and weekends. Burr handles the daytime crowds and also works weekends.

Both mother and daughter attribute their shop’s popularity to their will to succeed, God’s grace and their positive attitudes.

“We have many repeat customers. I love people and I am a talker,” Burr said. “I enjoy helping when they come in and don’t know exactly what they want.”
