When it comes to beach attire, the itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny polka-dot bikini may hold a place of honor all its own, but this year, T-shirt and souvenir shop owners in York Beach Square say hooded sweatshirts are their best-selling item.

“I only have one crewneck (style) in the shop,” said Carol Burnham, manager of Joan’s Beach and Gift, when discussing the popularity of “hoodies” which have been strong sellers for the past few years. The shop is located at 1 Main St., across from the Goldenrod restaurant.

Rose Ardagna, the owner of Ro’s Shirts by the Shore, on Railroad Avenue, agreed.

“Our hottest number, always, is hooded sweatshirts,” she said. Coming in a close second this year are two types of ladies embroidered T-shirts emblematic of vacation time: one shirt features a flip-flop motif across the front, the other, a row of martini glasses, she said.

Ladies T-shirts are also a big seller this year at High Fever, on Railroad Avenue.

That’s in part because rock ‘n’ roll T-shirt manufacturers have finally begun to produce shirts that are cut to flatter a woman’s figure. Some are even made of a cotton-Lycra blend which stretches and hugs a woman’s curves better than traditional cotton.
