Many opened presents Christmas morning; Stanley Tseng opened Tian Tian Supermarket in Richardson.

He realizes his tradition might not appear to be in the holiday spirit, but to him, enjoying one of the store’s two busiest days of the year is a gift in itself.

Tseng, the vice president of the Asian grocery store, says family time will come soon enough, but Tian Tian must remain open for out-of-towners who don’t often get to the Dallas area to shop for Asian goods.

Other than the Christmas carols that flowed from the store’s speakers, nothing about the hustle and bustle of Tian Tian suggested traditional Christmas on Friday. Red Chinese lanterns hung from the ceiling, and the automatic doors constantly slid open and shut as customers shuffled in, shaking the cold off their shoulders.

Staying busy could be seen as just another way of celebrating Christmas, Tseng said.

In the United States, Asian businesses are known to be among the few that remain open on Christmas Day. And some American families appear to be eating out more often for the holiday.
