Consignment business blooming for Middlesex flower shop
Middlesex Borough — Since the day it opened 56 years ago, Hoski Florist & Gift Shop has been a fixture of consistency.
“My mom and dad taught us to always treat people right and give them good value,” said Renee Hoski, who owns and operates the shop in the Middlesex Shopping Center on Route 28. “If you don’t satisfy your customer, you’ll never stay in business.”
The shop appears to be working hard in the midst of a struggling economy, mixing its traditional floral arrangements and products with a new offering: a consignment shop. Opened in November, the consignment shop aims to please customers and strengthen business as the economy recovers, Hoski said.
The move came following months of decline in the shop’s silk flower activity, Hoski said. A friend suggested offering consignments — a service that allows the public to bring its goods to the store, where they are displayed and sold, with the store and the item’s owner splitting proceeds.
“Say you redo your house or you have something — a knickknack, decorative dish or crystal piece — that you no longer want for any reason,” Hoski said. “You can bring it here, we’ll discuss the item with you, set a price and display it.”
