Down On Main Street Opens in New MilfordBy Alice TessierHousatonicTimes.com

CT — When veteran retailer Larry Schneider was looking for “the right spot” to establish another one of his Down On Main Street gift shops, he felt he lucked out in finding a location facing the New Milford Village, which just happens to be a Main Street address.

Down On Main Street will have “a soft opening” tomorrow (June 19) at 29 Main, formerly the site of Road & Track Sports, just in time for what promises to be a busy weekend in the downtown area as the New Milford Outdoor Art Festival will be staged on the Green.

Mr. Schneider has been operating Down On Main Street in Southbury, at 775 Main St. South—in the shopping plaza that houses Gayle O’Neill Jewelry, Victoria’s Secret, Chico’s, Aerosoles, The Loft, Starbucks and other established retail shops—for 12 years. He opened Down On Main Street in Newtown, at 14 Church Hill Road, four years ago.

“I’ve been looking around for another location for a while and even considered Litchfield,” the Woodbury resident said in an interview early Friday evening, as he and staff were finishing setting up the shop’s displays. “But this one just seemed like the right spot. I like being on the Green and not on [route] 202 or 7 where people just drive by.”

As in his other two shops, Down On Main Street in New Milford aims to offer a range of “gift items at a reasonable price.

“If people want to spend just $10 or even more, we’ll have some things for them here,” Mr. Schneider said.

He noted that the two high-profile brands of merchandise the shop carries are Vera Bradley, which is known for well-made fabric handbags and accessories, and Chamilia jewelry, which features hundreds of beads and charms that can be used to custom design items.
