Holland, MI – The Fris card and gift shop, which has been a landmark business in downtown Holland for 114 years, is undergoing a metamorphosis it hopes will help it keep up with changing times.

It is attempting to reinvent itself as a supply depot for the local arts community.

“We won’t carry cards anymore,” said Andrew Fris, a store manager, who is a fifth-generation member of the family that has owned and operated the store at 30 W. Eighth St. since it opened in 1900. “Hallmark cards are everywhere now — at Walmart, Walgreens and even the Dollar Store. It just didn’t make much sense to carry their cards anymore.
