Trump announces 30% tariffs on EU, Mexico

President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose 30% tariffs on the European Union and Mexico beginning Aug. 1 — a move that could significantly strain U.S. trade relations with two major economic partners.

Trump shared the tariff plans in letters posted to his social media account as part of a broader rollout of proposed trade measures.

In correspondence with Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump acknowledged Mexico’s cooperation in reducing undocumented immigration and drug trafficking into the U.S. However, he criticized the country for not doing enough to curb the crisis, warning that North America is at risk of becoming a “Narco-Trafficking Playground.

In a letter addressed to EU leaders, Trump stated that after years of discussions over trade, the U.S. must begin distancing itself from what he described as “long-term, large and persistent” trade deficits.

These letters follow Trump’s ongoing pattern of threatening tariffs as a way to correct trade disparities. Back in April, he implemented tariffs on several countries, only to delay their enforcement for 90 days to allow for separate negotiations. Now that the pause has expired, Trump has resumed sending letters to foreign leaders — though he has once again postponed the start date, saying the new tariffs will take effect in a matter of weeks.

Should the tariffs be enacted, they could ripple through the global economy, impacting trade flows and financial markets worldwide.
