Tucked in the Kerrytown neighborhood, Heavenly Metal opened its doors in 2002 after owner Vicki Honeyman decided to turn her office into a gallery and boutique.
Honeyman, a former director of the Ann Arbor Film Festival, had always been fascinated by Kathryn Arnett, a mixed media artist who worked with recycled metals. Her first wholesale order was from Arnett and with it came the inspiration for the name Heavenly Metal.
“As you walk through my store you can see that everything blends together,” Honeyman said. “I have a very specific esthetic and that follows through in all of the products that I carry.”
The products expand beyond recycled metal artwork as Honeyman’s store carries products ranging from jewelry, scarves, apparel and footwear to ceramic works, collage art and home goods, most of which is from recycled or reclaimed material. She calls her displays “stories” because she enjoys telling customers about the experience behind the product.
Customers can shop online and stay up-to-date on new inventory, trade-show finds and other products featured in the store through Heavenly Metal’s blog.
A haircut can also be in order while visiting, as Honeyman runs Vicki’s Wash and Wear Haircuts out of the store where she has been cutting hair professionally since 1980.
