“Thirteenth Street in downtown Philly is bustling largely due to the entrepreneurial nature of Valerie Safran and Marcie Turney, owners of Open House.

“There wasn’t much else open [here] back then, we didn’t really know what we were doing,” says Safran, “but we liked the storefronts and open format of the available space. We opened and later found out we’re in the heart of the city.” With Safran’s love of design and Turney’s culinary background they continued to revitalize the neighborhood, opening two more shops and three restaurants nearby.

Carrying hundreds of lines of products, variety is the name of the game at Open House. “More variety and keeping it changing has really worked,” Safran says.
