Croghan’s Jewel Box

Croghan’s Jewel Box has been a tradition in Charleston for so many years that five generations of many families have been loyal customers. In fact, one employee has worked there, off and on, for over 40 years. By offering hand- and machine-engraving, the store does a brisk business in gifts that commemorate special events: births, christenings, graduation, weddings, anniversaries and retirement. Sam Andrews, one of the store’s employees, says many customers collect “stirrup cups.” These are unusual sterling cups with animal heads carved on one end. The cups can be displayed either end up. In keeping with its historic setting, the store carries lots of antique jewelry and silver to complement its modern giftware and adornments. Croghan’s also sells awards to many of the local schools: cups, bowls and picture frames. Local couples often visit to select their engagement and wedding bands; wedding registry is a significant part of the business.
