How to increase global presence through eBay and bring artisan products to shops worldwide

{Sponsored} Tea towels printed with art, mugs covered in paintings, plates with prints, kitschy-cute corncob stools and emoji costumes are just a few types of items buyers can find at Third Drawer Down, an Australia-based wholesaler focused on bringing art to the masses.

Since 2003, Third Drawer Down has collaborated with over 200 artists (65 percent of whom are women) to produce thousands of products sold around the world. With the Ridiculous Inflatable Swan-Thing float from David Shrigley as a perennial favorite, Third Drawer Down is redefining art and décor pop David Shrigley's Ridiculous Inflatable Swan-Thingculture. And they’re doing it with a high level of success through a channel that gives makers and distributors global reach: eBay.

“eBay really supports and encourages premium brands to be marketed on their platform. The Art destination on eBay is a great starting point to explore both collecting original editions or accessible functional products like Third Drawer Down,” said Abigail Crompton, founder of Third Drawer Down. “eBay understands the need to be part of the art world community in a positive way.”

Crompton’s Melbourne, Australia-based company previously leveraged direct Designs from Yayoi Kusamaselling as their primary way of promoting their artisan-driven gifts and homewares, but sales fell short in the U.S. By utilizing eBay, Third Drawer Down was able to successfully launch into the U.S. market in the fall of 2018.

Since then, the Ridiculous Swan-Thing float and stress ball of the same design, as well as designs by Guerilla Girls that promote female artists and shake up the status quo, have emerged as their top sellers in the U.S.

Why sell on eBay?

Crompton chose to utilize eBay to reach a global market of 179 million active Designs from Guerilla Girlsbuyers and was excited to be able to participate in a fundraising capacity with the eBay for Charity platform, which allows buyers and sellers to easily support their favorite causes through eBay listings. Through the eBay charity campaign, Third Drawer Down was able to support +POOL, a nonprofit that is “building a river-water filtering floating swimming pool in New York. Designed to filter river water through its walls, the pool will allow New Yorkers to swim in clean, chemical-free water while restoring 600,000 gallons of clean river water daily,” Crompton said.

In addition to reaching the larger market outside of Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, Third Drawer Down is excited to have created new partnerships through working with eBay. The feedback from buyers has been nothing but positive, with many buyers continuing to purchase on eBay in addition to the Third Drawer Down website to make their purchases.

As a result of the success so far, Third Drawer Down is excited about the future selling on eBay. “We feel confident in furthering our energy and investment with eBay as we have profited from their platform already,” Crompton said.

What’s coming soon in the Third Drawer Down collection?

David Shrigley’s Ridiculous Swan-Thing float and stress ball may be the current best-sellers, but more art-based products from Shrigley including items with positive affirmations printed on them will be available in early May via their eBay channel, ebay.com/str/thirddrawerdownusa. Also, products from their new artist collaboration with David Salle will be available around the same time. Salle’s line includes melamine picnicware with fun pop-style art.
