Birmingham Business Kicks Off Strong In 2011By John HeineyHomeTownLife.com

Last year brought signs of hope as Birmingham enjoyed a year of solid business growth for retailers and new business activity. Existing businesses reported sales gains in 2010, many reporting 10 percent or higher. Retail leasing was also strong, with more than 30 new businesses opening.

We are pleased to report that 2011 is off to a good start as we continue to see indicators of a comeback for the retail and retail service sector in Birmingham. Toward the end of last year and early this year (typically a slow time for launching new businesses), Birmingham has pleasantly welcomed 10 newcomers to the city.

Attracting and retaining new Birmingham businesses is thanks in part to members of our community and surrounding areas who support them. The “Shop Local” campaign and the 3/50 Project have caught consumers’ attention, not just in Michigan, but throughout the entire country. Birmingham residents have embraced the message and are supporting businesses right here in their own community. You can make a difference by helping our new businesses succeed.
