Procrastinating romantics were out in full force Saturday, using the final day before Valentine’s Day to pick out the perfect gifts to please their sweethearts.

“Valentine’s Day is a last-minute holiday,” said Gayle Harte, owner of Gayle’s Chocolate, 417 S. Washington Ave., Royal Oak. “People don’t shop ahead.”

That creates a chaotic time as the big day approaches. With the holiday falling on a Sunday this year, it’s more like a weekend of hustle and bustle.

Harte said business was “nonstop” for most of Friday and Saturday, and it should continue today. Gayle’s Chocolates will be open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. for those last-second shoppers.

Harte said it’s become a tradition for some to purchase chocolate from her store on Valentine’s Day. Gayle’s Chocolates has been in business for 30 years, 25 at its current location.
