Cliff’s Variety Store – 75 And Going Strong
Last weekend marked the 75th anniversary of Cliff’s Variety Store, the Castro’s favorite spot for anything and everything. Current owners Ernie and Martha Asten planned a day of celebration that included raising money for community programs. Camille Bennett, 7, a sixth-generation member of the Cliff’s family, handed out prizes to those who played “spin the wheel,” disco played in the background, fresh popcorn was served, and shoppers could find night-lights to birthday gifts.
More than $10,000 was raised for the AIDS Emergency Fund, the Rainbow Honor Walk and the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy. The AEF also presented the Astens with a service award for their longtime support of AIDS research.
