Granville business celebrates anniversary with mothers tributeBy Jill SchrammMinotDailyNews.com

Granville — Linda Smette, owner of Cozy Cottage in Granville, is wrapping an anniversary, birthday and Mother’s Day celebration into one weekend.

Five years ago, Smette opened her antique shop as a tribute to her deceased mother on her mother’s birthday, May 3.

“I kind of wanted it to be a tribute to all mothers,” Smette said of the shop, which features items that would have been familiar to grandmothers and mothers of years gone by.

Cozy Cottage normally is open only Tuesday through Friday, but this week, Smette is inviting the public to coffee, tea and scones at the shop Saturday and Sunday for an anniversary and early Mother’s Day event. The Cozy Cottage and the local cafe have teamed up with specials for people who want to come and enjoy the day in Granville.

Smette said Cozy Cottage had been her dream for 20 years. When she finally opened the shop, it was after five years of preparation. The shop is located in a 1904 house, two blocks east of Main Street, that Smette and her family labored to restore.

Smette said her mother, Lorraine Grilley, was able to see the shop largely completed, although she died at age 86 a few months before the opening.

“She thought it was very nice,” said Smette, who believes her mother would have enjoyed the antiques as much as she does.
