Williamsburg, VA – On any day along Merchants Square, it’s not unusual to see happy people clutching small white paper bags. Inside these nondescript parcels are goodies from the Wythe Candy & Gourmet Shop.

It might be pieces of high-end Belgium chocolate, a handful of colorful jelly beans or the popular “turtles,” named for their turtle-like shape and fashioned from chocolate, caramel and nuts. A few more adventurous souls might be carrying an exotic chocolate bar infused with bacon, coffee or sea salt.

For more than 50 years, the Wythe candy shop has occupied the same Merchants Square location, offering guilty pleasures to tourists, town folk, college alumni and students looking for an excuse to take a study break. And like other businesses, the shop has kept up with the times by expanding its inventory to include new chocolate products with surprising ingredients.
