Cynthia Webb Supports STANDUP for KIDS Fund Raiser

What happens when you combine surfing, serving the community and solar-powered music? If you’re San Diego pewter gift designer Cynthia Webb, you create a one-of-a-kind pendant for the 4th Annual Switchfoot Bro-Am surf contest and concert at Encinitas’s Moonlight Beach.

Webb donated 275 custom pewter pendants that were included in the gift bags and as volunteer gift keepsakes for the annual event, created by the popular band to give back to their home community.

This year, the June 7 event benefited two local chapters of STANDUP FOR KIDS, a national nonprofit organization founded in San Diego to serve homeless and at-risk kids.

“My son, Corey did most of the design work on this piece, we had a lot of fun working together on it,” explained Webb. “He took elements from different album covers and mixed that with an image of a wave, music notes, and a surfboard to symbolize the surf contest. We’ve attended this event in the past and were really impressed with Switchfoot’s dedication to the community, so making this was a natural for us.”

In addition to the free concert – attended by 6,000 fans – the all-day event featured a surf contest, vendors, a surf jousting exhibition, live mural art painting, and an after-party at the Belly Up Tavern, one of North County’s premier live music venues. The concert went “green” with help from San Diego-based Sustainable Waves, which provided solar-powered sound and staging. The solar power option avoided emitting 1,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, the equivalent of not driving a car for 1,100 miles.

This year’s event raised $60,000 for STANDUP FOR KIDS. The $5,000 retail value donation continues the studio’s commitment to community involvement; another local event raised over $1,000.00 for relief in the recent Asian natural disasters.

Other Webb designs now support non-profit organizations working with seniors in need, child abuse victims, breast cancer awareness and children with autism. Other Cynthia Webb Designs pieces can be seen at the studio Web page at www.cynthiawebbdesigns.com.
