Eatonton merchant sees green in red and black
Marlene Gordon is eagerly awaiting the start of the University of Georgia’s football season Saturday.
But she won’t be watching the game. She’ll be selling Bulldog novelties to some of those making the pilgrimage up U.S. 129/441 to Athens.
Gordon owns Gordys Gifts in downtown Eatonton, a small shop at 101 Jefferson Ave. just north of the courthouse square. She has a variety of home decor items, wedding and baby gifts and jewelry, but she also stocks a lot of collegiate novelties.
And being on the route many faithful fans follow to Athens on football weekends, Gordon makes certain she has plenty of Bulldog goods on hand.
Forget your car magnet that tells the world that you are a Bulldog fan? Gordon has them, plus Georgia towels, flags, shoes, cups and Teflon ice trays that freeze G-shaped cubes for those pre-game cocktails.
“Christmas is my busiest season, but early fall when Georgia is playing at home is also good. But it is mostly the first few games. After that, the fans have most of what they need to finish out the year,” she said.
Natives of south Georgia, Gordon and her husband, Richard, moved to Putnam County more than 30 years ago when Georgia Power transferred him to Plant Branch on Lake Sinclair.
