Fashionable food: This is not dessert
Jenni Bowman’s frosted cupcakes, cream tarts and chocolate truffles look luscious enough to eat.
But don’t take a bite.
These culinary creations are for decoration, not dessert.
The products Bowman, a Lehi native, designs may not satisfy a sugar craving, but they are sweetening up homes around the country and delighting some impressive customers.
Last December, about six months after the faux food designer started her company – Jenni B. Originals – she was a guest on Martha Stewart’s television show. Bowman, who lives in Charlottesville, Va., while her husband attends law school, showed the arts-and-crafts maven how to make papier-mache tarts to hang as Christmas ornaments.
A few months later, the Electrolux appliance company special ordered 575 jumbo cupcakes with peach, yellow, blue and green frosting. The fake cupcakes were used in April for the company’s display at the national Kitchen and Bath industry show in Chicago. The set matched the company’s recent advertising campaign, featuring actress and television host Kelly Ripa.
“The company had the food stylist come to my house (where she has her studio) and teach me how to make them exactly like the cupcakes that were in the television commercial and print ads,” said the 28-year-old Bowman, a graduate of Utah Valley State College.
