“Just Do It” may be the slogan for a popular athletic outfitter, but it also could be the motto of Fine Things, a new gift shop in downtown Wyandotte.

After all, owners Debby Ouellette and Mieka Wheeler spent years working together at another Downriver gift shop, all the while dreaming that one day they would have a chance to open their own store.

They did just that earlier this summer, opening the shop along Sycamore, just west of Biddle Avenue.

“It’s been great,” Wheeler said. “We’ve been great friends for a long time, so to do this together is great. Plus, Wyandotte has been very supportive.”

Because the two worked together for so long, both said they got a good idea of how they want to run their store–and how they don’t want to run it. With that in mind, the entire shop has been designed from the ground up to meet those ideas.

Rather than a cluttered store with a service center pushed off to the side, for instance, visitors to the store will find a custom-designed service island right in the middle. From there, display cases full of colorful items ring the store, all while soothing music plays.
