Pacific Grove frame shop thrives amid declining economyBy Marie VasariMontereyHerald.com

Saturday marked the one-year anniversary of a particularly significant moment for Glenn Gobel. On March 14, 2008, Gobel made a transformation from longtime employee to a small-business owner as he opened Glenn Gobel Custom Frames in Pacific Grove.

That his picture framing shop has made it to the one-year mark in an economic downturn is significant. What is more striking is that Gobel is not only surviving, but thriving at a time that business closures and consumer reluctance are commonplace.

Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar said the business climate is particularly challenging, and he discouraged more than a few would-be entrepreneurs from launching a business because of timing.

Still, there are small-business owners such as Gobel who are finding ways to flourish. Some are launching first-time ventures. Others with established businesses are finding opportunities in expansion and acquisition.

Luck, timing, preparation and perspiration all play a factor in whether they will succeed, say financial experts.
