Lakewood, OH — “Going green” was one of the most overused catchphrases of 2008. It even topped the list for banishment in the annual Lake Superior State University overused words survey.

But that’s not to say it’s a bad idea. In fact, it’s great — as long you don’t brag about it ad nauseum.

Now a new Lakewood shop is making going green, er, being environmentally responsible, a little easier.

Opened last summer by former banking executive Mary Evans, Green Smart Gifts sells eco-friendly fashions, toys, bath and body products and home decor. Most are organic and much is locally produced.

“I was in banking for over 20 years and wanted a change,” says Evans. “A friend came up with the idea. She said, ‘You’re focusing so much on being green in your own life, and you’ve talked about owning a gift shop, why not put the two together?’ “

So far, Evans’ gamble has paid off. After a slow start, business picked up as shoppers began to learn about Green Smart around the holiday season.
