Students’ shop opens in style
Students have been combining their craft skills and business talents to open their first gift shop in Harrogate.
Springboard students at Harrogate College, who have a range of learning difficulties and disabilities, invited Lady Emma Ingilby to officially open the shop on Monday.
Cookery students working in the catering side of the course also served a range of homemade soups to guests at the event.
Lady Ingilby said: “I love shopping but it’s the first time I have been asked to open a shop. It’s very exciting I hope the shop is a huge successes.”
The students will be selling greetings cards they have designed and created themselves to staff, visitors and other students. The shop will also give them the chance to build their communication, literacy and numeracy skills for future employment. They will gain hands-on experience of a retail environment and have to keep an eye on stock levels, learn to use the till and work with customers and each other.
