Jeannette Rankin Foundation recognizes Maxine Burton

Maxine H. Burton, founder and president of burton + BURTON, was recognized as a 2019 Shining Star Honoree by the Jeannette Rankin Foundation. A Shining Star Honoree is a leader in the Athens community commended for using their time, talents, and passion to lift up women and girls in all aspects of life, including skills development, economic development, or business experience. The honorees are true stars for making those around them better by their work.

The Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund (JRWSF) gives support to low-income women 35 and older to build better lives through post secondary education. The average Jeannette Rankin scholar is a single mother with two dependent children who has an average household income of $20,000. For 2019, the foundation has provided scholarships to over 120 women across the country. The scholars demonstrate courage, determination, and persistence as they succeed in conquering poverty. The scholarships make education accessible to an often-overlooked group, giving hope to women juggling school, work, and family responsibilities.

These scholars are making great changes for themselves, their families, and their communities, breaking the cycle of poverty. “To be recognized as a 2019 Shining Star Honoree by the Jeannette Rankin Foundation is a true pleasure,” said Burton.

“For over 40 years, the foundation has impacted the lives of so many women, and to be connected to this organization is very meaningful,” she explained.“With women comprising over three quarters of the burton + BURTON workforce, I have always made it a priority to provide subsidized daycare, 401K matching, and profit sharing for employees to ensure economic security and prosperity.”
