New ownership for Log CabinBy WellandTribune.ca

The Log Cabin, a 25-year-old landmark business at the top of Highway 20 in Fonthill, has been sold.

Scott and Ursula Penner, owners of Fonthill Pharmasave, will take over the building on April 1, said Lois and Harry Schonewille, owners of the gift shop, in a news release.

“We will continue to own and run the Log Cabin Art Gallery at the back of the building to ensure that the transition of the new ownership is smooth and transparent to you,” said the Schonewilles. “We also want to assure you that all the staff you are used to will still be here to assist you and give you the same great service that you have come to expect.”

The Log Cabin became a gift shop well known for carrying Canadian-made gifts and souvenirs.

Harry Schonewille said at age 65 it’s time to slow down a bit. Increased price competition from big-box stores has also affected the gift shop business.

The Penners opened Fonthill Pharmacy on South Pelham in March 1999 and in 2002 joined the Pharmasave co-operative to offer more products and services.

“They have recently celebrated nine years of serving Pelham, with the last years being in the professional plaza next to the Log Cabin,” said the Schonewilles.
