Long Beach Senior Center’s Shops Offer a Way to Give BackBy Grace WongPressTelegram.com

Long Beach, CA – On the north side of the Long Beach Senior Center, porcelain dolls stand stiffly atop a wooden case filled with turquoise rings, gold chains and silver earrings. On the south side of the center, vintage clothing is hung neatly on curved rods and a rack of black shoes leans against a wall.

With a gift shop on its north side and a thrift shop on its south side, the Long Beach Senior Center serves as a focal point for seniors who are looking for a place to socialize, eat and enjoy recreational activities. For those who volunteer in the gift shop or the thrift shop, it’s a way to give back to the community.

“For a lot of people, that’s the only way they can afford to shop,” said Barbara Loeffler, coordinator of Information Referral and Assistance. “They rely on the thrift shop for their clothing, and the gift shop gives them choices to give gifts to family members within their budget.”
