Tulsa, OK – Debt is a four-letter word in more ways than one.

So was layaway, once upon a time – or, at least, it wasn’t one used loudly.

Growing up years ago, if you didn’t have much money, you may have used a store’s layaway program, said David Pfeifer, manager of Helzberg Diamonds at Tulsa Promenade. That’s stereotypically the demographic people picture when the L word pops up.

Times have changed, as more stores – from national big-box retailers to local boutiques – are offering layaway, and more people are taking advantage of it, no matter what their income.
