NY NOW Offers Five Days of Special Programming

A five-day schedule of activities – including 40+ educational seminars, “Only in New York” special events, author appearances and book-signings, on-trend displays and product innovation awards – will be among highlights of the summer 2013 debut of NY NOW®, the Market for Home & Lifestyle (formerly NYIGF®), August 17-21, 2013, at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Pier 94. “NY NOW’s extensive slate of programming is a valuable component of the market experience,” said Christian Falkenberg, NY NOW director and GLM senior vice president. “The seminars offer relevant trend information and actionable business advice, while the after-hours events encourage networking against the exciting backdrop of New York City.”

Education begins in advance of the market, with a free NY NOW Orientation webinar on Thursday, August 8, at 2pm (ET). The session will offer an online tutorial of NY NOW’s layout and set-up, as well as general tips for first-time visitors. Newcomer education continues at the show with free, daily “NY NOW Orientations” hosted by Baby & Kids and Giftware News.

The NY NOW seminar series complements the show’s four new product collections, HANDMADE, HOME, LIFESTYLE and NEW. Details about all summer 2013 NY NOW seminars and special events are available online at www.nynow.com/programs, and advance pricing discounts are in effect through August 13.

In the HANDMADE series, six “Power Hour” sessions, covering social media and content creation, publicity, video marketing and more, will be hosted by CRAFT (Craft Retailers & Artists for Tomorrow), August 17-19. On August 17, “Cash-In on the Cachet of ‘Made in the U.S.A” will explore how to capitalize on this growing consumer preference. On August 20, the Alliance for Artisan Enterprise will explore “Growing the Market for Artisan & Global Handmade Products.” Additionally, as part of GLM’s Artisan Resource™ tradeshow which runs currently with NY NOW, daily “Importing 101” sessions will be presented at Pier 94 on August 18, 19 and 20.

The HOME track includes an exploration of four home trends (Monochromatic, Neo-Traditional, Well Cultured, and Vintage… with a Twist) on August 18 at “Open House – Key Trends In Home Products,” presented in connection with the “Open House” display sponsored by One Kings Lane and Sandow Media’sGifts & Decorative Accessories, Home Accents Today and Home Textiles Today. “Customer Perceptions & Visual Merchandising Strategies for Home Products,” hosted by ART (Accessories Resource Team) on August 18, explores inspired merchandising styles and formats. “From Color Theory to Selection,” sponsored by IFDA on August 19, previews inspirational directional colors and emerging trends from Hunter Douglas and. House Beautiful.

LIFESTYLE sessions include the Day Spa Association’s “Visual Merchandising for Lifestyle Products” on August 20. Later that day, Fashion Group International presents “Design Destinations – Where Fashion, Home & Lifestyle Design Is Going Next.” In addition, Workman Publishing will host the appearance of three best-selling lifestyle authors: Susan Spungen, author of What’s a Hostess To Do? Including 313 Ideas and Inspirations for Effortless Entertaining and 121 Recipes for Spectacular Party Food on August 18; Kathryn Petras, author of Don’t Forget to Sing In the Lifeboats on August 19; and Jennifer S. Holland, author ofUnlikely Friendships on August 20.

The NEW ideas track will address technology, online marketing and social media. On August 18, “Social Media: Use Your Retail Skills To Increase and Grow Your Online Presence & Sales” addresses social media and e-commerce success. IR Focus will present two sessions; “Web Site Best Practices – Learn from Your Peers!” on August 19; and “Lessons from The Second 500” on August 20. GIFT SHOP magazine will host “Supercharge Your Email Marketing Campaign for Maximum Sales Impact” on August 19.

NY NOW will sponsor a “NY NOW NEW! welcome reception” on Pier 94 on August 17 to celebrate opening day and Earnshaw’s will host “Trends & Treats” at the Javits Center on August 19. Summer market after-hours events include the “High Line Guided Walking Tour” sponsored by IFDA on August 17; the “62nd Annual Retailer Excellence Awards” on August 18, which recognize excellence in retailing and individual achievement; the Museum Store Association’s Member Networking Event on August 19; and NY NOW’s “Night Off-Broadway” featuring specially-priced tickets for Blue Man Group on August 19.

Additionally, and in cooperation between NY NOW and the New York City showrooms (7 West, 41 Madison and 230 Fifth Avenue) all summer 2013 market-goes can enjoy free market week admission to the Museum of the City of New York, from August 16-21. Making Room: New Models for Housing New is on view.

NY NOW also will feature three special products displays including: a new “Made in USA” display spotlighting both handmade and factory-produced American-made products; the 2nd annual Open House Trend Display sponsored by Sandow Media and One Kings Lane, showcasing trends influencing home product design and sales; and the popular SustainAbility: design for a better world® display featuring eco-friendly and socially-responsible gift and home products, as well as Eco Choice Awards winners in three categories.

Superlative product design and innovation will be recognized throughout NY NOW with a series of product awards. These include the Accent on Design® Awards, Accent on Design Bloggers’ Choice Awards and ASID’s NY Metro Chapter’s “Best of the Best” Awards. Four “Best New Product Awards” (Baby + Child, Personal Care + Wellness, Home Textiles and Gourmet Products) will be determined by editors of leading trade and consumer media outlets, and all winning products will be eligible for the first-ever, show-wide, “People’s Choice” Awards, which will determined through online balloting at RedClayDesign.com.

NY NOW, the Market for Home & Lifestyle, will run Saturday, August 17, through Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Pier 94. NY NOW’s four comprehensive collections – HOME, LIFESTYLE, HANDMADE and NEW! – will encompass 100,000 products in 400+ product categories.
